About

Cumin is a small annual herbaceous plant of the parsley and carrot family that grows best in regions with a sunny climate and some rainfall.

Cumin seeds have a warming, earthy flavour. Cumin is a popular ingredient in Middle Eastern, Asian, Mediterranean and Mexican cuisines, and is one of the main ingredients in curry powder.

Uses

Cuisines rich in spice and deep in flavour such as Indian, Middle Eastern, North African and Mexican dishes often feature Cumin. Cumin is an essential ingredient in curry powders and masalas.  Add to old fashioned beef stews or Shepherds Pies for a modern twist and zing of flavour.

There are three main ways to use cumin seed depending on how you prepare them; you can toast, grind or fry them. To get the most intense flavour, toast them first in a hot, dry pan, giving them a deep, smoky quality. Once you've toasted them, you can add to salads along with toasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds or add them to bread dough. Otherwise, you can grind them down into a powder using a pestle and mortar.
