Garbanzos (or chickpeas) are round and medium in size with a beige color. Cooked, they have a firm texture and nut-like flavor which make them excellent in salads and soups. They can also be ground into a flour and used as a main ingredient in Middle Eastern dishes such as hummus and falafel. Garbanzos are higher in fat and protein than other commonly eaten beans.
One of the earliest cultivated vegetables, chickpeas have been nourishing humans for over 7,000 years. Rich in fibre and protein, chickpeas are also naturally gluten-free and low in sodium making them a popular ingredient in many vegan and vegetarian dishes. These golden chickpeas have a delicious nutty taste and buttery texture, and are a versatile pantry staple for so many different recipes.
Dried chickpeas require a long cooking time of 1-2 hours, however this can be shortened if soaked for 12-24 hours beforehand. Chickpeas are a staple ingredient in many Middle Eastern and Indian dishes. They can be cooked and eaten cold in salads, added to soups and stews to fill them out, or made into a delicious hummus paste. You can roast chickpeas in any range of herbs and spices to create amazing flavour and a great meal base. Ground chickpeas, called gram flour or more commonly just chickpea flour, can be shaped into balls and fried as falafel. Add them to a curry for delicious flavour.
